SMALL CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAM
You don’t have to be a scientist or explorer of centuries past to experience innovation glories. You can easily get facilitated there. Start out on a small cross-functional team if you want to see everything that’s available to you. Larger teams can’t go everywhere, and some of the most fascinating parts of of a breakthrough journey aren’t accessible with large transformations. Instead, a smaller facilitated project will give you a voyage much closer to those of the serial innovative geniuses you’ve read about – although without the risk of failing outright or getting it irretrievably wrong. You will almost certainly meet some of innovation’s permanent inhabitants, like camaraderie, intense excitement and dawning belief, which will be the opportunity of a lifetime for individual contributors. You may even have the chance to follow in the footsteps of great explorers like Jobs and Westinghouse, each of whose expeditions have left traces that you can still visit today.

WHAT LIES HIDDEN?
Columbus at the edge of the world understood. Pioneers of the old west knew. Immigrants that grace America today get it. FACING THE UNKNOWN may be difficult and rife with risk, but it could potentially deliver an extraordinary future. When it seems impossible (no map, no mentor, no understanding of how to proceed), it takes courage to begin and and persistence to overcome the unexpected pitfalls and obstacles. The rules do not yet exist and the choices have not yet been made, thus limitations are few. Pioneers and innovators proceed, placing their trust in their tools and in their own skills. Until innovation-muscles are fully developed, it’s risky; but just like any discipline, the more you proceed and succeed, the more you trust yourself and the easier it is to succeed again. As Henry Ford said, “What’s right about America is that although we have a mess of problems, we have great capacity – intellect and resources – to do some thing about them.”
