Even companies secure in their market position, who have clarity about their technical future, feel valued by customers, and who know how & when to initiate new strategies – even they are feeling the pinch of attracting enough top talent with the correct skill sets to implement their strategies.  Sure employees love to be on a winning team so all you are doing should be enough. Right? But most employees are a little bit afraid that their life will be ordinary. They need to know it is possible to step out of normal and achieve the seemingly impossible – just a few times, at critical junctures. That would be best of both worlds – security & clarity  and explorations & adventure.

You don’t have to be a scientist or explorer of centuries past to experience innovation glories. You can easily get facilitated there. Start out on a small cross-functional team if you want to see everything that’s available to you. Larger teams can’t go everywhere, and some of the most fascinating parts of of a breakthrough journey aren’t accessible with large transformations. Instead, a smaller facilitated project will give you a voyage much closer to those of the serial innovative geniuses you’ve read about – although without the risk of failing outright or getting it irretrievably wrong. You will almost certainly meet some of innovation’s permanent inhabitants, like camaraderie, intense excitement and dawning belief, which will be the opportunity of a lifetime for individual contributors. You may even have the chance to follow in the footsteps of great explorers like Jobs and Westinghouse, each of whose expeditions have left traces that you can still visit today.

Structured Innovation is the methodology used to resolve problems that constrain business and that seem unlikely (or even impossible) to solve. Breakthroughs are achieved while others are busy re-hashing old ideas again and again. Innovation Scientific collaborates with clients to loosen the effect of constraints on their businesses, solve their most restrictive problems, and free them to develop agile strategies and implement them to secure the market position they desire and even manage their competition’s options. As American entrepreneur and businessman, Henry Ford, said, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.”

How did the legendary business leaders create a “seemingly never-ending stream” of strategic, game-changing products that customers loved? They succeeded in business repeatedly, even in the worst economic conditions, and made huge contributions. One secret is they understood that a huge source-spring of potential lay hidden where (and when) no one else was looking for it. Steve Jobs once said, “I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”

Columbus at the edge of the world understood. Pioneers of the old west knew. Immigrants that grace America today get it. FACING THE UNKNOWN may be difficult and rife with risk, but it could potentially deliver an extraordinary future. When it seems impossible (no map, no mentor, no understanding of how to proceed), it takes courage  to begin and and persistence to overcome the unexpected pitfalls and obstacles. The rules do not yet exist and the choices have not yet been made, thus limitations are few. Pioneers and innovators proceed, placing their trust in their tools and in their own skills. Until innovation-muscles are fully developed, it’s risky; but just like any discipline, the more you proceed and succeed, the more you trust yourself and the easier it is to succeed again. As Henry Ford said, “What’s right about America is that although we have a mess of problems, we have great capacity – intellect and resources – to do some thing about them.”
